Helene Schjerfbeck

Finnish painter Helene Schjerfbeck lived from 1862 to 1946. In 2007-08 she was the subject of an exhibition that traveled to museums in Europe, as described here, but it seems her fame remains pretty well confined to Scandinavia. As far as I can discover there has never been any exhibition of her work in the United States at all, but I am sure that will change one of these days, as she is bound in the fullness of time to become better known.

A well-illustrated biographical sketch (in French) is here.
