Martin

Sunday afternoon I went out to do a few errands in the rain and collided with this procession outside Mission Dolores. The statue represents St. Martin de Porres, born in Peru in the 16th century (the red-and-white striped rectangle at St. Martin's feet is the Peruvian flag). A crowd processed toward the church under umbrellas with musicians at the rear – drums, a clarinet, a trombone and a tuba. San Francisco police diverted traffic.

St. Martin is holding a broom, his emblem, to show that humble work is sacred.
