Venice



The family Canalettos in the Royal Collection are so numerous that it must be very difficult to decide which ones to hang at any one time. The two at top are fully worked-up oil capriccios (like the drawings seen yesterday). These are set in Venice, with recognizable architectural features mixed up with imaginary ones. Below are more conventional views of Venice which somehow never descended into complete predictability in Canaletto's hands.
