In the opening years of the Renaissance Andrea Mantegna (1430-1506) modeled the engravings above on marble friezes carved in high relief along the sides of excavated Roman tombs.

With the Renaissance all but over 150 years later, Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665) was still using the same wide shallow Roman-tomb template, as below.
