There are many 17th-century oil-paintings laid down on a base of copper, but the portrait above by the Antwerp master Gonzalez Coques is the first I have encountered painted on a base of silver. Curators at the National Gallery in London suggest that both the "delicate finish" of the painting and the precious metal as painting surface could indicate that the portrait was intended for a husband or other intimate to carry during separations.
