Fans at the Victoria & Albert Museum

Fan (France)
The Finding of Moses
ca. 1700-1725
watercolor on ivory (brisé-style)
Victoria & Albert Museum, London

Brisé fans consisted of sticks only, with no fabric or paper or skin to contribute a surface for decoration. Above, an ambitious landscape was created in watercolor solely on the uneven surface of spread ivory sticks. The fan-format below was the more common one, with a curved leaf of paper to receive the pigments of the main design, which would only later be attached to the frame and pleated.
